Water colours

I got a few emails and a few friends of mine asked me about my old paints (also one wondered about, why I'm so obsessed with this brand and why I only want this one and only kind).

When I went to school (I studied fine art in Stockholm, Sweden), I bought two sets of watercolours, and the one that I really fell in love with was my small set of 13 Schmincke pans.

Schmincke (Schmink-uh) is a German company, and they have been in the watercolour business for over 120 years. And their paints are still made the traditional way, by using natural pigments and minerals.

From all the different brands I have tried (and this is my own personal take on this), I find Schmincke is a high quality paint. It not only takes a very small amount to get a lot of coverage, but it lasts long and its artist quality. It is however, expensive, but if you work with watercolours, it is well worth it. And I also found out (so far, from what I have gathered and I have looked almost everywhere) that we cant buy it here in Canada, but we can get it from US. I found a few good art supply stores/websites that sell Schmincke, BLICK Art materials and Fine Art store . And for you who live in Sweden, I found out a good art store (thanks to my dear brother, who also got me some paint : ) This store has right now a sale on the half pans of the schmincke paints Artist Butiken.

Here is a picture I made. left hand side is done with Winsor & Newton, Cotman watercolours (pans) and the right hand side is done with Schmincke watercolours (also pans). Just give you an idea.

What is your favourite water colour paints? Do you like the pans (dry) or tubes (wet)?
